Case study

A 14 year the old female patient visited our clinic with the following complaints:
·       Fatigue and  Weakness, from  one year
·       Loss of appetite, around 3 months
·       Nausea with occasional vomiting, around 1 month
·       Edema, around 3 months
·       Dyspnea, around 1 month
·       Reduced urine frequency around 3months
·       Dryness of skin, around 1 month
·       Protein in urea since she was 3-4 years old and stopped for some time with Allopathic medication but started again.
·       No history of Diabetes

History of past Illness-MPGN (Glomerulonephropathy)

Family History- Family history of kidney disease in paternal side.
Father got the kidney transplant was done at the age of 34 years.

Bowel Movement (Mal)-Constipated (Malavshtambha)
Tongue (Jihva) – Coated (Saam)
Voice (Shabda) – lowered (kshin)
Touch (Sparsha) – hot (Ushna)
Physical Appearance (Drukh) –Lean, thin & week (heen)
BP-140/80 mm of Hg

Lab investigations

·       Hb- 7.7
·       S.Creatinine 7.1
·       Blood Urea 195mg/dl
·       Urine Albumin ++ Trace
·       RBC in Urine 120-150
·       Sodium (Na) (142.9 ± 1.9) wavering
·       Potassium  5.18
·       Phosphorous 10.9
·       ALP 403
·       Biopsy shows- C3 glomerulonephropathy
She felt weak and lethargic in daily routine. She started to develop generalized oedema with diminished urine frequency and protein in the urine.
 She consulted many Nephrologists at different hospitals and started allopathic drugs. But did not get any relief and she was advised for regular heamo- dialysis. The patient refused for dialysis and looking for some alternative treatment they came to us for Ayurvedic treatment.

Rasayan Dravya- 

According to Ayurveda, tissue damage can be prevented and repaired by Rasayana for Mutravaha Srotas (urinary system). Rasayanas have the ability to improve the immunity of tissues and hence increase the resistance of the tissues. It will increase excretion filtration by increasing RBC & HB (Rakta bhar vridhi ) whereby it acts as anti-inflammatory (shothaghna) and overcome Urine retention (muttrakrichha).

Anti Emetic and Digestive Dravya 

helps in the reduction of vomiting and sensation of vomiting as well. It increases appetite and also improves digestion. For this reason, pitta pacifying tablet was also administered which works like Proton Pump Inhibitor (pantop).
These medicines have a scraping effect (Lekhana action) on blocked channels. It is a good diuretic accompanied by an increase in sodium excretion.

CONCLUSION

In this case study, the patient has shown encouraging results during the management of Chronic Kidney Disease. Laboratory tests showed good improvement within two months and serum creatinine, blood urea, and albuminuria were reduced to a good extent. The patient has shown great relief in all the signs and symptoms. The general condition of the patient is also improved. With this treatment demand for dialysis is eliminated, inpatient. Currently, the patient is living a healthy and happy life. This treatment approach is a safe and effective alternative in case of kidney failure. The patient’s creatinine is lowered to 4mg/dl from 7 mg/dl in two months of treatment & the patient needs not to think about dialysis or transplant now. Her Haemoglobin has also increased from 8 mg/dl to 10.3 g/dl. Urine output increased to about 2 liters. She is still on ayurvedic medicine of kidney failure & enjoying a healthy life: going to school, able to enjoy sports & other leisure activities. Thanks to Ayurveda for saving a life!!!
